The Anabolic Vs. Catabolic Metabolism

I see this as a continuum going from Anabolic <—> Catabolic with people tending to fall on either side of point 0, tending toward one or the other. Me, I’d say I’m a 2 on the right side of point 0.

Anabolic
Metabolism 5- 4 – 3 – 2 – 0 – 1 -2 – 3 – 4 – 5 Catabolic Metabolism

Hallmarks of the Anabolic Metabolism:

• Put on muscle easily
• Has difficulty getting lean
• Will respond well to lower carb intakes (approx 30%)
• Responds well to higher training volumes

Hallmarks of the Catabolic Metabolism:

• Has difficulty adding LBM
• Gets lean easily (but has difficulty retaining LBM)
• Responds well to higher carb intakes (approx 50%)
• Responds best to lower training volumes

Where do drugs factor in?

The above is based on non drug using people. Drugs are the great genetic equalizer: those who add muscle easily but can’t get lean are able to do so, and those who have great difficulty adding LBM, but have no problems staying/getting lean, can do so while retaining LBM. Obviously, genetic traits still play a role (or everyone would look identical and respond identical, etc) but drugs allow for genetic limitations in the above, faster recoup, ability to tolerate higher training volumes, etc.

Got Shoulder Pain?

One Possible Solution to Chronic Shoulder Pain: The Rotater

Aches and pains are very common to athletes and people who exercise regularly. The shoulders are a common area for chronic aches and pains. Some times the pain is due to a specific injury which needs to be diagnosed and treated by a medical professional. However, much of the time the aches and pain in the shoulders  are due to muscle imbalances in the rotator cuff muscles, which can be stretched and or strengthened to both improve function and reduce pain.

Dr. Chiang covers some useful info on shoulder pain  via his write up on shoulder Impingement Syndromes  HERE, and there are a number of good articles on this site regarding injury prevention. One simple gizmo I have found very helpful is called  The Rotater. It’s a simple yet effective method of both stretching and strengthening the rotator cuff muscles. Watch my short vid below, followed by the examples of  using The Rotater for internal and external  stretching. If interested in additional information on how The Rotater can be used to strengthen the shoulders, improve function, reduce pain, and so forth, hit the picture below the vids.

The Benefits of Sandbag Training!

If you have watched my videos over the years, you know I’m a fan. Here’s why; Sandbag training is some of the most productive “functional” training around. The sandbags Ultimate Sandbag takes sandbag training to another level.  They have handles and grips, and are very well made. The number of exercises you can do with the sandbags  is virtually endless. A must have for home gyms and those who want to take their functional strength and fitness to the next level! I use them with teams I work with and clients at all levels, and keep a small, medium, and large bag in my home gym. If you watch the various vids on the site here, you will see I use these bags for a large variety of training. I have added additional vids to watch below, and if interested in more info, click HERE

“Buffered” Creatine Update!

Folks, firstly a quick update on the state of another “improved” form of creatine, which when put under real scientific scrutiny, didn’t live up to it’s claims (read hype and pseudo science) as I predicted in a prior article (The Creatine Graveyard).  Additional comments with links to the study, can be found here The Creatine Graveyard Update 2012!
